I had only 24 hours in Boston and here’s how I spent it!

If you’re planning on visiting Boston and have limited time, you’ve come to the right place.

My husband and I stopped in Boston overnight to break up our trip home from Acadia National Park. Check out our 3-day itinerary here! Honestly, we were pretty much winging it, but wanted to make the most of our time there, and we did just that.

Where We Stayed

Oof. I’ll preface that Boston is not friendly on the wallet. However, my husband and I were able to snag a prime spot in Somerville that is perfect if you’re only in town for 24-48 hrs!

The Airbnb was a finished basement-level studio in a single-family home, with a private entrance, full-size bed, kitchenette, and workspace.

Pros:

  • within walking distance (5-15 minutes) from multiple restaurants and grocery stores
  • only a 5-minute walk to the train station
  • dog-friendly

Cons:

This rental has “above-average” noise from kids, as the owners occupy the top section of the house. They disclose this in the description! We were gone during the day but heard banging around and kids talking around 6:30 am and as late as 10:30 pm.

It wasn’t a deal-breaker for us since we were only there for two nights but if you’re not an early riser, you may want to book somewhere else. I did find some earplugs in the bathroom 🙂

24-Hour Itinerary

As major foodies, David and I had to start our day with a solid breakfast. We get pumped when we find a good spot to recommend to others.

We did zero research before getting to our Airbnb so we pulled up Google and chose a place with a good rating, which ended up being a place called The Neighborhood Restaurant and Bakery.

The restaurant was about a 10-minute walk from our Airbnb. There was a short wait when we got there but it was oh-so worth it.

The Neighborhood Restaurant is family-owned and operated and you can sense it the moment you walk through the gate [we could also hear our waitress calling out orders to her son lol].

We sat outside on a patio, where we sipped on hot coffee and waited for our food. I ordered the #102 Grapenut pancakes with egg whites and turkey bacon and David ordered the #13 Neighborhood Omelette.

The food took a little long to come out, but you get a choice of fruit or cream of wheat with your entree so we had something to hold us over. It was delicious and the portions were pretty big as well.

Tour of the Freedom Trail

After breakfast, we walked back to our Airbnb to let our dog out and then hopped on the train to head downtown.

Originally, we were just going to walk around ourselves, but our train stop came out right into Boston Commons and we saw a sign for a walking tour of the freedom trail that started shortly after our arrival.

The tour was $25/person and it ended up taking ~2.5 hrs. And yes, our guide was dressed in costume and it made it that much better

I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy this tour so much. However, I loved getting a little refresher lesson on Boston history and it was a great way to see the city, that we otherwise wouldn’t have explored. I highly recommend it!

The tour follows a route past America’s first public school, the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House, and a view of the Samuel Adams statue. Concluding at Faneuil Hall Square, you can finish the tour in a place that’s surrounded by great eateries and landmarks, leaving you in a great position to explore more on your own!

Red Sox Game

And to top off our incredible visit to Boston, we absolutely had to go to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. It was both David’s and my first time being there and it was such a surreal experience. As a Southern girl, I loved hearing the thick Boston accents and watching the employees walk around yelling “hot dogs!” and “cold beeya!”

Since this was our first time there, we splurged and got better seats. With tax and fees, our tickets cost ~$400. Although they didn’t win, it was still a memorable experience and an end to our trip!
